Everything You Need to Know About the Smoky Lake Pumpkin Fair

Sep. 15, 2018

This summer is flying by and before you know it, it’s going to be time for warm apple cider, Halloween costumes, and pumpkin themed everything.

Fall is coming up quickly and so is the Smoky Lake Pumpkin Fair. This annual fair is always fun for the whole family. Let’s look at some of the fun activities you can take part in at this year’s fall town fair!

What Does the Fair Celebrate?

Every year, the farmers and people all around Alberta bring their harvest of gourds, pumpkins, and squash to the Smoky Lake pumpkin fair to have a weigh-off. Not only that, but it’s a great way to celebrate the end of summer and the beginning of fall.

When is the Smoky Lake Pumpkin Fair?

The fair and the associated activities are always during the first weekend of October. For 2018, that means it’s Saturday, October 6th, and Sunday, October 7th.

The grounds open at 9 am and the festivities last all day!

Admission

General admission is 10 dollars for those of us who are 18 and up. Kids ages 8-17 get a discounted admission of 5 dollars. Kids younger than that get free admission!

You can take a free shuttle bus from the centre of town to the fairgrounds to make transport hassle-free.

Activities Offered

Now that we got the nitty gritty details out of the way, let’s get into the fun stuff.

Weigh-Off

The big event of the fair is the pumpkin weigh-off. The giant pumpkin weigh-off contest starts at 12:30 pm on the Saturday of the fair weekend. After the weighing, you can even bid on the giant pumpkins at the giant pumpkin auction!

Golf Tournament

Another big event for the fair weekend is the Pumpkin Classic, which is a golf tournament. It starts at noon on Sunday, October 7th. It’s a 9-hole tournament complete with prizes for the winners.

Activities for the Kids

You’ll also get all the classic activities you expect from a town fair. Your kids can get all decked out in face paint and enjoy the animals at the petting zoo. They can also get pumpkins to decorate, watch the pumpkin drop, and take home a balloon animal.

They’ll also love riding on the Mini Midway.

Food

There are also plenty of opportunities for food throughout the fair weekend. A huge farmer’s market offers fresh produce and locally made delicacies all day on Saturday.

The Saturday seniors’ garage sale offers pie and coffee, and the pumpkin kick-off event the Friday before the fair does as well.

You can also check out the beer gardens and lunch the Smoky Lake Curling Rink and the supper and dance event at Warspite Hall on the day of the fair.

We’ll See You at the Smoky Lake Pumpkin Fair This Fall!

These are just a fraction of the activities you can look forward to at the Smoky Lake Pumpkin Fair 2018. Each year gets better and better with the pumpkins seeming to get bigger and bigger.
