The official gate way to Alberta's Iron Horse Trail is Smoky Lake. East from Smoky Lake you will enter the White Earth Valley with its' numerous trestles crossing over the White Earth River. The impressive trestle in Bellis then leads to Vilna, while going further east you come to Ashmont. Abilene Junction, also called "mile zero" in the centre of the three trail branches. From here you can go northeast onto Mallaig, then Glendon, Moose Lake Provincial Park, Bonnyville, Fort Kent, Ardmore and ending up in Cold Lake. If you were to go southeast from Abilene Junction you would find yourself going through St. Paul, Elk Point, Lindbergh and ending up in Heinsburg
